History of the British Samoyed Club, how it all began……

The British Samoyed Club was founded in 1931, in order to revive a more widespread and active interest in the Samoyed, and to popularize this beautiful breed. The motto of the Club is:- ‘Be Worthy of Your Sport and Play the Game’

The Rules and Regulations from that time stated that the affairs of the Club shall be conducted by a Committee of 16 members, eight of whom shall be drawn from the Provinces and eight from the Southern and London area. Early committee members were in fact from as far south as Devon to Manchester and Sheffield in the North. The membership from that time, were also very widespread, and worldwide.

Over the last 30-40 years and with changing rules, the Club did tend to be more Midlands based, although committee members were, and still are from all around the country.

The trophies of the Club, as listed in the early Rule Book, include many that are still available to our members now. One such trophy is, The Arctic Perpetual Trophy, presented by Miss Keyte-Perry, who was President of the Club in the early years.

Since the early years the Club has held events for members to attend. Great fun was had by all at our rallies, where not just show dogs but family pets came to partake in the games and matches, and to make new friends.

We also held a Dinner/Dance each year one of the first clubs to do this, a marvelous way for humans outside of shows to ‘let one’s hair down‘ sometimes even in fancy dress. Records exist of Xmas parties held in London when there was always the customary visit from Santa and his sleigh pulled by a team of sams. Today we still do this at our Ch show in December. We are also the only Club to still hold two Open shows a year as well as a Ch. Show.

Our past President and long time member of the club Betty Poole ( Golway ) worked tirelessly for the club in many ways, one was a booklet she compiled ‘ The Illustrated Breed Standard ‘ in 1993 and illustrations from this publication are still being used at the Judges Seminars today, something which we know she would have been very proud of.

Samoyeds are known as the smiling, happy and friendly breed, and as a club, so are we, always ready to help and support our members home and abroad.
